AMEB Theory of Music Grade 4: how to prepare
Grade 4 theory asks for more than recall: you need to apply scales, intervals, chords and terms accurately in writing. Prepare by revising the earlier grades, working topic by topic against the current AMEB syllabus, and finishing with timed papers and careful checking.

A topic-by-topic approach
- Make a checklist from the syllabus: scales and keys, intervals, rhythm and time, chords, terms and any other listed topics.
- Rate each topic green, amber or red, and start with red.
- For each topic, do a few written exercises, check them with a worked solution and retry mistakes.
Timed practice
Once topics are secure, sit full papers in the time allowed. Decide in advance how long each section deserves, and leave a few minutes to check clefs, accidentals and key signatures.

- Read each instruction twice before answering.
- Write clearly so the examiner can see exactly what you meant.
- Use the question's wording to decide the format of your answer.
