AMEB Theory of Music Grade 3: how to prepare
Grade 3 theory extends scales, key signatures, rhythm and intervals beyond the early grades. Prepare by working through the current AMEB syllabus topic by topic, writing answers by hand, and practising timed papers with a worked solution for every mistake.
Grade 3 is where written theory starts to feel like a subject of its own. The AMEB syllabus is your checklist. This guide shows how to turn it into a plan.
Turn the syllabus into a plan
- List each topic: key signatures and scales, rhythm and time signatures, intervals, chords, terms and anything else listed.
- Spend more time on the topics you find hardest.
- Write exercises by hand, and compare with worked solutions.
Build speed and accuracy
- Practise key signatures and scales until they are automatic.
- Count rhythm bar by bar, and check that each bar adds up.
- Use flash cards for terms and signs, and revisit them often.
Before the exam
