The greatest number which divides both 25 and 44, leaving remainders 1 and 8 respectively, is:
A 26
B 12
C 13
D 1
Correct answer: B — 12
- If the number d leaves remainder 1 on dividing 25, then d divides 25 − 1 = 24.
- Similarly d divides 44 − 8 = 36.
- The greatest such d is HCF(24, 36) = 12 (and 12 is larger than both remainders).
- Why the other options are wrong:
- A (26): The remainders must be subtracted, not added.
- C (13): A slip in the HCF of 24 and 36.
- D (1): That is HCF(25, 44). Subtract the remainders first.
Subtract each remainder from its number first; the greatest divisor is the HCF of the results.
