Question 1

Choose the word that is most SIMILAR in meaning to UNWILLING.

A avid

B rash

C hidden

D candid

E disinclined

Worked answer

Correct answer: E — disinclined

  • Step 1: 'unwilling' means not wanting to do something.
  • Step 2: Look for the option with the same meaning. 'disinclined' also means not wanting to do something, so the two words are synonyms.
  • Why the other options are wrong:
  • A (avid): 'avid' means wanting very much to do something, which is the OPPOSITE of 'unwilling', not the same.
  • B (rash): 'rash' means careless of danger or consequences. That is a different idea from 'unwilling'

(not wanting to do something).

  • C (hidden): 'hidden' means kept out of sight, which has nothing in common with 'unwilling'.
  • D (candid): 'candid' means truthful and straightforward, which has nothing in common with 'unwilling'.

If you can't recall a word's meaning, think of where you have met it: a sentence, a book or a news story often reveals it.
