Question 1

Sam walks 7 km and 500 m. How many metres is that altogether?

A 507 m

B 7,000 m

C 1,200 m

D 7,500 m

Worked answer

Correct answer: D — 7,500 m

  • 1 kilometre = 1,000 metres.
  • 7 km = 7000 m.
  • 7000 m + 500 m = 7500 m.
  • Why the other options are wrong:
  • A (507 m): Change the kilometres into metres first.
  • B (7,000 m): Don't forget the extra metres.
  • C (1,200 m): 1 km is 1,000 m, not 100 m.

Change to the same unit before you add or compare: 1 m = 100 cm and 1 km = 1,000 m.
