Question 1

Gus had 446 stickers and gave away 336 of them. How many stickers are left?

A 120

B 100

C 782

D 110

Worked answer

Correct answer: D — 110

  • 'Gave away' means we SUBTRACT.
  • 446 - 336
  • Subtract the ones, then the tens, then the hundreds. If you cannot, borrow a ten. The answer is 110.
  • Why the other options are wrong:
  • A (120): This is the correct answer (110) plus 10: an extra 10 was added at the end of the calculation

(an off-by-10 error).

  • B (100): This is the correct answer (110) minus 10: 10 was taken off at the end of the calculation (an off-by-10 error).
  • C (782): 'Gave away' means take away, so subtract.

'Left', 'gave away' and 'fewer' signal subtraction: start with the bigger number.
