Question 1

Which animal in the list has a pupa stage in its life cycle? [2 marks]

A beetle

B cricket

C dragonfly

D grasshopper

Worked answer

Correct answer: A — beetle

  • Only animals with a complete change (egg, larva, pupa, adult) have a pupa stage.
  • A beetle changes in this way.
  • Why the other options are wrong:
  • B (cricket): A cricket hatches as a nymph and grows into an adult, so it has no pupa stage.
  • C (dragonfly): A dragonfly hatches as a nymph and grows into an adult, so it has no pupa stage.
  • D (grasshopper): A grasshopper hatches as a nymph and grows into an adult, so it has no pupa stage.

Insects such as butterflies, mosquitoes, bees and ants have a pupa stage; cockroaches and grasshoppers do not.
