Answer
Question 1 (2 marks) [Trigonometry]
In triangle ABC, ∠ABC = 90°, ∠BAC = 33° and AB = 24 cm.
A
B
C
24 cm
33° x cm
(a) Find x, correct to 3 significant figures.
(a) Answer: 15.6 cm
- Label the sides from angle A: BC is opposite, AB is adjacent, AC is the hypotenuse.
- tan A = opposite ÷ adjacent (TOA), so x = 24 × tan 33°.
- x = 15.6 cm (3 s.f.).
SOH-CAH-TOA: choose the ratio that links the side you know to the side you want.
