Question 1

Monthly sales are 54, 65, 84, 31, 47, 61. Calculate the 3-point moving average centred on month 3, correct to one decimal place.

A 84.0

B 74.5

C 63.0

D 60.0

Worked answer

Correct answer: D — 60.0

  • Average months 2, 3 and 4:
  • = 60.0.
  • Why the other options are wrong:
  • A (84.0): That is the centre value alone.
  • B (74.5): Use three values, not two.
  • C (63.0): This is the correct answer (60.0) plus 3: an extra 3 was added at the end of the calculation

(an off-by-3 error).

A 3-point moving average averages the value and its two neighbours; it smooths a time series.
